Suddenly today, any Acrobat file I open closes after 13 to 14 seconds. I've tried several different and unrelated PDF files. All the same response. Then I upgraded to the latest Acrobat. Same issue. Help greatly appreciated!

My TOC for a lengthy document with multiple chapters changes from roman to Arabic page numbers (the TOC itself, not the chapter page numbers) between viii and 9. Both the Front Matter "chapter" and the TOC "chapter" are set for roman numerals. I keep updating numbering but nothing changes. Maddening! Also, like others here, InDesign keeps crashing multiple times a day. Also maddening. Please fix bugs. Thank you.

I'm using ID2018 (because 2019 still has too many bugs for me), with Windows 10, on a Lenovo computer with a large AOC monitor. No matter whose suggestions I follow, my Chapter Title will not span any columns. I've tried 2 columns, All, and 3 just in case it wants to include the space between columns. (I long since deleted and updated my Preferences, so I don't think it's that.) Seems like such a simple instruction. Thank you for helping.

Thank you, Aman! That solves the primary problem. Handy to know! But I'm still stuck on the tables that flow onto a second page, where either: 1. The Table Title Cont'd (on second page) gets the first number and the Table Title (on first page) gets the following number, or 2. Both Titles get the same number but it's up one, as in the example below, where they should both be Table 1.27. Many thanks! - Cindy

Thanks, Srishti, My WinZIP no longer works, so I'll have to send you the 13MB unzipped file. I have no idea how to send anything to the Cloud. I looked up DM on Google and assume you are referring to something on Twitter, to which I will not expose my computer, so that's out. I can send it via WeTransfer.com if that will work for you. ? Definitely not resolved, unfortunately. I'd be happy to send you an entire chapter. How do I send you a 13MB file? (That doesn't include the equations and images, of course, but you probably don't need those. Let me know if you do, though.)

Sorry about that, Srishti. I hit Save by mistake. Here are some screen shots. The first is the first Table in the chapter, which begins with number 5. It comes after Figure 18, so it's not confusing those two Paragraph Styles, at least. (Of course, the x-refs in text are all off, too, but should be correct once the Table Title numbers are also correct.) Next is the 5th Table in the chapter, where the number skips to 10 instead of 9. And here is one of the ones that split across a page, where the table number is "correct" on the second page but goes up one on the first page. Is there a different way (something changed since ID2017) to enter a Table Title Cont'd than the way I described in my first email? That could explain why this method no longer works properly; it was the only way I could find in your Help or on YouTube to do it. In this example, the numbers are now 8 apart--another jump. I hope that's enough to get you somewhere, Srishti! Thanks, Cindy

Thanks, Srishti. Here's the info: Windows 10 See below It has occurred in every chapter of a massive book that both I and my partner have worked on for the past 8 months, so no, no specific document. We work on the chapters on separate computers, by the way, but both in ID2018. Here are several screen shots:

Hi, everyone. I'm using InDesign 2018 on a desktop PC. Suddenly, the table numbering has gone wonky in two ways: 1. Mid-chapter, ID begins skipping table numbers, first one number, then another, then it continues normally for a while, then skips another. 2. When a table breaks over a page, I've always used the Table > Table Options > Headers & Footers dialog to repeat the header lines once per page but skip the first page, then added the required number of lines to the top of the table on the first page and copied the lines from the second page. I give the Continued table title a different style name, so it should not interfere with the numbering of the Table Title styles. I've never before had a problem with this, but now I'm getting one number on the continued title and the FOLLOWING number on the initial title! These two issues do not appear to be related, because the first happens well before the second. And meanwhile, the figure numbering is just fine. It's only the tables. If anyone has suggestions to solve either issue, I'd greatly appreciate them. Cindy Shaler{User information removed MOD} {Renamed by MOD}

I definitely prefer the second design, Keith. Have fun! May I suggest you not move to InDesign 2019; it has problems, as first releases always seem to do. Hi, Keith, Thanks for sending the designs without the grids. I get a better idea of what the pages might look like. One possibility for a page layout that may work for you here is a five-column grid; that is, create a grid with five equal underlying columns with appropriate gutters, make the outside column the one you use for the marginal quote text and the other two, larger text boxes for continuing text. I think this is what Jane was getting at? Please make sure the gutters are wide enough so that the reader's eye doesn't simply cross over from one column to the next. If this is an online book, consider that people may be reading it on their phones. White space is god! Thanks for letting us all chime in. I'll think about all this again when I design the next book.

Hi, Keith, It's hard to tell what either will look like with all the grids and guides showing, but I think I prefer the second only because it's less traditional and would take up less space on a digital page. However, I'd want to see both without the grids and guides; I'm concerned that the gutter between the marginal note (?) and column 1 may not be wide enough.

Hi, yannd53417708, Don't know what asset or nas means. We're not on a server; our business is at home with a huge network of two. :<) Our only InDesign plug-in is MathMagic, with which my partner and I create the thousands of equations in this book. Those are EPS files. Graphics are primarily EPS as well, with a few AIs and JPGs. The book is almost 600 pages. Yes, I know, we should have been doing this in FrameMaker; but our client is used to using InDesign with MathMagic, although they haven't had any books this long before. Did I mention we're on Windows? I've been through Layers now, trying to locate 14 equations that appear as errors for Ch7--even though the line at the bottom of the ID screen tells me there are "No errors." Lucky I opened the Links window and scanned it. Anyway, those 14 do not appear on any page in Ch7. They're marked OV or overset text, of which there is none. I'm trying to figure out how to delete them since they may be causing all my problems. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled Acrobat, just in case. Thanks for any ideas.

I'm having similar problems--but I'm using version 2014, and the crash only happens on one chapter in a book of 11 files, as well as when I try to package the entire book, of course. I started making packages of one or a couple of chapters at a time, just so I could get a final PDF to my client last week, but I'm still trying to make a package of chapter 7 (the bugaboo). I'm now going to try the solution suggested by Eugene Tyson in "File Crashing on Output - printing/PDF/other."

When printing from FrameMaker to PDF in Windows, I used to be able to create a custom page size by clicking on the Add button that appeared to the right of the Adobe PDF Page Size window, in the Adobe PDF Document Properties dialog box. With Frame 9, that button no longer appears; in fact, the whole dialog box is cut off just inside the edge of the entry windows. Do I need to set something? Thanks for any help you can offer. - Cindy Shaler

Thanks, Arnis and Sheila, The file isn't in the hotfixes.htm document. I will try downloading the whole thing again and reinstalling. And I will use WinZip; good idea! Meanwhile, I am transporting my FrameMaker files to my laptop on a memory stick and making the PDFs there, then transporting them back. Don't know why I didn't think of that sooner. Hi, Arnis, I am both administrator and user because I'm the only user, so that should be fine. I load all my own software. I re-extracted from the zip file 349575_intl_i386_zip.exe, but I do not get a file called WindowsXP-KB952909-v2-x86-ENU.exe in the same folder. Nor is it in my WINDOWS folder. I searched my entire system for that file name. Nada. Any more ideas? Remove and reinstall FrameMaker? Cheers, Cindy Cynthia M. Hi, Arnis, Thanks for pursuing this with me. I'm not sure what you mean by installing using an administrator account; can you elucidate? I downloaded the file 349575_intl_i386_zip.exe to my FrameMaker 8 folder, double-clicked on it, and said to run it. Did I leave out something? Yes, I rebooted. And I always use Print, to Adobe PDF. I do not create a separate Postscript file, though and then distill it. Cheers, Cindy Cynthia M. When printing to PDF from FrameMaker 8, whether I print a book, a chapter, or just a few pages, page numbers on SOME PDF pages are disappearing! Never the first page; sometimes not the second; sometimes for a few pages, then not, then they print again. HELP! I can't print one page at a time on a long document. Feels as if I've return to the Stone Age--or at least very early Acrobat. I'm using a Dell machine with the Windows XP Professional. Many thanks for any ideas.
